There is a simpler way to do this.  Do the following:
1.  Open the file in question.
2.  Press Alt-F and then arrow down to save as which I believe is A.
3.  Tab to enable saving and press space bar or enter on it.
4.  Name the file and put it where you want as normal.

This will get you out of protected mode.  I've seen this at work in Office
'10.
