Hi Karen, The most common reason for documents being in protected mode is that they were downloaded from the internet. Therefore, before opening them in Word, highlight them in the folder to which they were downloaded, press the Applications key or Shift-F10, and arrow to the Properties option, and press Enter. In the Properties dialog which opens, you'll have to route your mouse pointer to the bottom left of this dialog, and then move the pointer up until you find a button labelled Unblock, and then left-click this button. Finally, move your mouse pointer down to the button labelled Ok, and left-click that button. All of this mouse pointer navigation is due to the fact that the buttons are not focusable in the normal way if you follow the steps I've given above. At any rate, once you perform the left-click of the Ok button, you'll be back in the folder where you were before, and then you can go ahead and open the Word document, and, probably, you'll find that the document is no longer protected.
