Robert, going to the end of a word or line indeed works, however,
normally when making a word selection in practically any editing
program, or in a text reader when using the control-shift arrow keys you
are selecting a whole word at a time, where as with the f8 method, you
will only be selecting the first character of the word. If I am alone in
this experience, I would surely like to get to the bottom of why.
Anyway, that is the way f8 has always worked for me.

I just do a F8 at the beginning of the word or sentence and then an F8
on the last letter or punctuation that I want to copy and then a C.
Then of course I go to where I want to put the info and do a ctrl V.

Subject: Re: selecting text and f8 key
I feel the need to interject her to say that when using the F8 method in
brows mode control and right arrow keys to highlight words, that on the
last desired word, that you must at that point highlight each individual
character up to the end, because you will only get the first character
on that last word. Just a quirk of the F8 way of doing things, but a
fact/quirk nevertheless.,
Of course, if you just wish to use the home and end keys for selecting
to the end of a line, then this is not an issue, but if you wish to lift
only a word or two, this could get to be rather frustrating until you
figure it out. I mean, it just isn't supposed to work that way.
