In general, it seems that tower is for a larger structure that is more lattice-like and mast for a structure that is more of a pole. I am not sure this distinction makes sense, but I am also not sure it's harmufl. However, if one renders and one doesn't, in the default style, that's a bug, and presumably someone can make a pull request to fix it - it seems obviously uncontroversial.
