There are a few highway=virtual and highway:virtual=* objects, which is intended for similar issues. See: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/virtual_highway
I've used it a few times on pedestrian squares where a route relation passes over the square (and it makes no sense to use the entire square, not map a "real" highway on top of it. I personally wouldn't call this mapping for the router. That would be like saying we should suddenly delete the centrelines of roads if we start mapping highway areas. Also, shouldn't this be a tagging discussion, not talk? --Joost
