You might try sight singing the piece a number of times before playing it on your instrument. Like others have said, get it in your head first.
When learning any tune, I like to sing it either out loud or to myself the entire time I am learning it (sometimes lasts a few weeks). As I get to "know it better", I start to put my own interpretations on it. Best of luck.
