Pete,
I can't say that I think of "how many" notes so much as I do about
what rhythmic base I want to hear, or as you mention, the "feel" I
want. That pretty well gives me the equation. Plus, a lot of times
what comes out has a lot to do with what I've been exposed to that
day, whether it be notation or audio.
