I like those pesky little metronomes; once you get the hang of them
they are fun to play to.....I'm currently working on playing fiddle
tunes when it's beating on beats 2 and 4 as opposed to beats 1 and
3...you get a different almost "swingy" feel that way

Something that has helped me in the past...if you have trouble getting
a metronome to play in beat ;) try a drum machine...they are a little
easier to get used to

I have a drum machine that has a simple 2/4 country beat...it's a
really cool exercise to chop to it....an interesting thing occurs when
you stop chopping....all of the sudden the drum machine's snare pops
back into the mix because the mandolin is no longering covering it
sonically.....it provides instant feedback as to when you are right on
the beat.

BTW John McGann has a nice instructional DVD on using metronomes in
different ways...
