Out of an average of 150 messages per day I receive less than 5 that are HTML. Hardly a majority. You perpetuate whatever you want by your actions. Begin using plain text and responding to HTML messages with an explanation as to why you have done so and sit back to watch the changes happen. It is absurd to say that doing something is proper because many do it.
