Thanks to everyone who pointed out that I was using
ftp://ftp.ritlabs.com instead of just ftp.ritlabs.com. This was also
pointed out to me offline by Chuck Mattsen. But when I then tried the
address without the ftp://, I got the new error message, "Connection
failed ftp.ritlabs.com - Blocking call cancelled." Chuck kindly looked
up possible reasons for this message but none of them applied to my
case.
Now, however, the thing is working using ftp.ritlabs.com with my
ordinary anonymous login, and email as password. Perhaps there was
something amiss with a server. I'm not sure yet, but I may have been
using a different SMTP server than I am right now. I'll investigate this
further.
Thanks also to everyone who dug deeply and offered me more information
about FTP. All of this is useful to me.
