That was what Alexander V. Kiselev (no longer with us) had to say on
the topic of proportional fonts. AFAIAC I use the Andale Mono font
(apparently available by download from M$) first commended by Klaus E.
Werner on this very list way back in June 1999 and I (and other long
term users) find it pretty acceptable. A more compact but still
pleasant alternative is Lucida Console.
