I think you make a very good distinction here between users who don't
want to learn some of the finer points of mail manipulation,
filtering, etc., and those who would love to learn how to get this
extra functionality but who simply don't want to/don't have the time
to learn how to utilize lots of arcane, poorly documented (if that)
strings, etc. that resemble programming code. I think that there's a
limit to how much "tinkering" the average user is willing to do to
obtain the functionality. I consider myself of above-average interest
when it comes to wringing as much as possible out of a program's
capabilities, but I really resist having to work with PERL/regular
expressions and some of the other various hoops one must jump through
to get at these almost-hidden capabilities. Perhaps with v.2x, when
and if one is ever seen, the ability to have plug-ins would allow for
modules that would act as wizards for some of these things and not
require the average user to return to night school to learn how to use
their email client.
