In Reference to "Memo Field - Ideas for better implementation." From Chuck Mattsen: "

I've come up with a bit of a work around for this Chuck. I set my
column width for the memo at 6, and then use an exclamation "!" as the
first character in any memo I write. That leaves just enough room for
a "!" to show up for any message with a memo attached, yet hardly uses
any real estate.
Of course, your width may vary I guess dependant upon your font size
but you should be able to get away with a sliver relative to the other
fields regardless.
Something to try anyway.
