Have you tried the option "Browse deleted messages"? (It's
in the Main window --> Folders menu).
If you look at the file via WinCommander or using a text
editor, can you see the messages, or is the file itself
messed up?

The 'sister file'? Do you mean the index file
(messages.tbi)?

A *general* backup program is always better. You don't only
want to backup your e-mail, but also your documents,
databases, spreadsheets, bookmarks etc. (But I do understand
that such a remark is rather useless to you at this stage.)
