NA> But what TB! does when it checks a signature on a PGP encrypted
NA> message is exactly as advertised. The message must first be decrypted
NA> to obtain the signature... the verification information is presented
NA> in the PGPLog, but the message remains in it's encrypted state.
NA> Therefore:
NA> "To decrypt an encrypted e-mail message from The Bat!, use "Check PGP
NA> signature" command from the Tools menu. If the message is signed, PGP
NA> automatically checks its signature validity. Note that the message is NOT
NA> stored so you need to decrypt it this way each time you read the
NA> message."
NA> depicts exactly the way TB! behaves when you check the signature on an
NA> encrypted message. OTOH, if you use Tools/PGP/PGP Decrypt then TB! will
NA> check the signature *and* leave a copy of the decrypted message.
I see what you're saying but what is written on the web page is still
misleading. If a TB! user says that he/she wishes to decrypt a message,
what do you think they mean, and what would you tell them to do? I'd tell
them to use the PGP decrypt command and explain how it works, assuming
that they wish to decrypt *and* read the message.
If they ask how to verify a signature, I'd tell them to use the "check PGP
signature" command and add that the command works with encrypted and
signed messages as well. However, for encrypted messages an unencrypted
copy isn't created in order to simply verify the signature. I don't quite
know if someone would wish to only verify the signature of an encrypted
message and not decrypt and read it as well.
This is why PGP so clearly makes their command, decrypt and verify.
There's no verification only command.
