With Mercury, you don't have to switch anything. Just set and forget.
MDaemon is even better with SMTP since it is able to connect to a
smarthost if there are problems achieving a direct e-mail delivery.

Mercury can be toggled on or off-line. It doesn't matter anyway since
if you're off-line it will continue polling in the background without
protest or intrusion. When I used it, I just used to ignore it and
just used TB!. I logged on and off the internet as I wished and
Mercury did its thing.
