If you *ever* wish to communicate with anyone over the Internet on any level more private than what you would write on a postcard, *strong* encryption like what PGP/GnuPG offers is a very useful tool. While learning PGP is not entirely intuitive, it is possible - even for someone not very "geeky". Motivation to learn is a very powerful force. I was only three months into my first computer/Internet experience when I decided it would be a good idea for me to use PGP. My decision to learn PGP came from both an unhappy experience of Internet identity spoofing, and from reading a few articles on Internet privacy (or more accurately - the lack thereof). I'm still no expert in cryptography (and feel no need to become expert in it), but actually using PGP or GnuPG for the daily encryption, decryption, signing, and verifying of email, documents and files is not very difficult at all. I feel that PGP/GnuPG is more secure than S/MIME, and it's also more versatile (can be used beyond just one's S/MIME compliant email client). In addition to the usual User Guide, there are easy to understand online tutorials, and helpful mail lists. If you ever feel the need to put anything in an envelope before sending it through the post, you most likely *need* strong encryption. Most Internet correspondence beyond the occasional "How's the weather?" type missive deserves to be encrypted.
