"a SMTP"? you probably meant MUA.

Ok, I'm not on the net for that long. :)

But broken MUAs (or other applications talking directly to port 25 of a
MTA) might have confused MTA when they did not 'escape' the period.

Enough acronyms and wallowing in memories.
