I unfortunately haven't had the time to participate in this thread,
though Allie did a great job of succinctly defending my side of the
argument. I would like to point out, however, that this most certainly
*is* a privacy issue, if only a very small one (small enough that I
haven't bothered to alter my headers, after all).

The 'educational' line in the x-mailer header gives out information
about me that some people would otherwise not know. It's not a huge
deal, but I wish the headers were more generic and did not provide
information beyond which e-mail program I use. No other "educational"
software that I use (e.g., MS products) identify themselves in such a
way.

As far as getting adequate privacy only for the "normal" price, would
you still feel comfortable about it if TB! offered a discounted price
for their software in exchange for letting them track your
web-browsing habits, such that the people with the least wealth would
be the most likely to succumb to such an invasion of privacy? That
example is clearly orders of magnitude more extreme than the
"educational" header issue, but the principle is the same. It is not
nice to extort people into giving up personal information.

By the way, after tomorrow morning I'll be out of town for a couple of
weeks. So I won't get a chance to see the continuation (end) of this
thread until then. I promise not to raise it from it's well-deserved
grave when I get back :)
