I went through similar but sending... I forget what I did to fix it (I
have CRS), but here are the 2 notes I got from support:
(I am connecting via ADSL)

1. Please take a look at the log - it may give a clue. Press Ctrl+Shift+A
to view the account's log. If it does not tell you anything, contact
me quoting the log...

After sending the log:

2. What is the Connection type setting in the "Options|Network and
Administration" ? They should be set to "LAN or manual". If it is set
already, check the Network settings in the account properties
dialogue..

I don't remember what fixed it, but it came from this so it must have
been a network setting.
The program was crashing if I tried to abort. It has not done that in
months now, except when BellSouth's mail server is down... which is
several times a week. Fortunately, I have better mail servers to use.
