I keep my main folders (Inbox, TBUDL, and other list folders) under about 1000 messages. However, each of those folders has an associated archive folder where the rest of the messages are stored. So, but using a combination of base size limits, alternate deletion settings, and removal of old messages on exit, I shunt old messages to an archive folder which I only access when I need to (searching, message ID queries). Seems to work well for me. The Bat! starts up and shuts down in under 5 seconds and is very responsive during normal operation on my 1.8 GHz laptop with 1.5 GB of RAM and a 5400 RPM hard drive. However, I do run Purge & Compress nightly after I have finished the day's work. -- Chris Quoting when replying to this message is good for you and me.
