I have definitely seen it in letters Word documents occasionally:-
"Our website (www.example.com) has full details" but that now tends to
be "Our website at www.example.com has full details"

TB!'s issue seems to be that the closing bracket is the *final*
character of the URL. This is even more unusual.

But Joe Public doesn't *sigh*

Confirmed. The HTML editor does, though..

Confirmed. In the HTML editor, the *closing* angle bracket is also
included.

If you enclose the URL in brackets, as is claimed in bug 5254 to be
common:-

In MicroEd, the bracket at the beginning and the extra bracket at the
end are *not* included. The Bracket that is the last character of the
URL *is* included.

In Windows Editor, the bracket at the beginning and *both* brackets at
the end are included.

In HTML editor the one at the beginning is *not* included but *both* at
the end *are* included.

Here, both viewers displayed the same. I.e., the final bracket *not*
included for both your examples. The angle brackets also did not
become part of the URL in either viewer.
