That paragraph was the "putting in the work to do it manually now"
that I mentioned in my previous paragraph.

The "setting things up to archive automatically in future" was
mentioned in my next paragraph, although not described clearly. See if
this attempt is clearer.

You don't need to do it in advance.
Once you decide "Folder X" needs archiving:

1 Create the archive folder where old messages will go

2 Edit the folder properties of "Folder X" as follows:

General -> Keep messages in base for "N" days

Additional -> On exit (tick both boxes)

Deletion -> Use folder-specific deletion settings
Alternative deletion (move to the specified folder)
           path/to/archive folder for "Folder X"
Use alternative deletion for purging this folder (ticked)
           Compress emptied folder automatically (ticked)

3 Each time you close down TB!, all messages older than "N" days will
be moved to the archive folder you just created.

Not basic, but it *is* there. At least twice.
As well as, the method I have outlined above, there is also
Jim's semi-automated method where the moving of messages is achieved
with a manually-activated filter to move all messages older than "N"
days to the archive folder specified in the filter.
