I approach SMEs as peers, because that's what they are. I spend time
with them just about every day, whether it be in project meetings or
in random non-work discussions in the halls. I make my dependencies
known up-front in a project, and I deliver info to them on time. I hit
every angle on my own before going to them for clarification. I help
them through sticky parts when possible, and offer them help in
reviewing their specs and poking at their code/test plans/whatever to
find possible problems. When it comes time for them to review my work,
I give them only what's necessary for them to review (not the entire
book/chapter/whatever), I tell them specifically what I want them to
look at and look for, and I give them a deadline that is not too
distant yet accommodating (usually about 5 working days, unless it's
something really small).
