My first look at DITA came at a presentation of BlastRadius XMetal at a Chicago STC chapter meeting last year. As I saw it, the DITA interface basically made it incredibly easy to save out pieces of information and for bringing those pieces into other places in a structured (XML) environment. I was drooling all over myself as I watched the presenter putting the DITA interface through its paces. I found myself thinking, "Now this is something I would consider leaving FrameMaker for." (And I'm a huge Frame fan, so that didn't come lightly!) Fortunately, the new DITA plug-in for structured Frame does the same type of thing, although I haven't had time to experiment with it yet. I saw it in action in an Adobe presentation on it earlier this year, and I was just as impressed as I had been with the XMetal presentation. The DITA plug-in makes it fairly easy to work with chunks of information in structured Frame. You can easily select text and save it out as a shared piece. You can bring in these share pieces of information in different places without the nightmare that was text insets in unstructured Frame. You can manage all of the shared pieces fairly easily. There's a lot more to DITA than this, and this description is horribly over-simplified, but that's what I saw as the most beneficial. Learning how to use this and converting my files from unstructured Frame to structured are on my to-do list for the next year or so.
