As a new member of the list, I'd like to introduce myself. I'm Carol Anne Wall, a FT technical writer with a Securian Financial Services in St. Paul (the lone writer in my area) and a part-time Tech Comm faculty member at Metro State University. Officially, I've been a technical writer for 8 years, although I have been doing technical writing for well over 20 years. They just never called it that in previous positions.
In my FT job, I don't do anything fancy or forward looking, technology-wise. Basically I write alot of requirements (database table changes, UI changes, business rules), take alot of meeting minutes, and once in a while they ask me to write a training document. When the discussion turns to new, bleeding edge technology or documentation style, I read about it but realize it isn't applicable to my day job. But I do use the information in the discussions in my class. My day job is pretty boring, but it is a paycheck. I don't mind saying that in a public forum because it's the truth. But what I do is what needs to be done at this company. That's probably all that matters.
