Hello everyone, I've lurked around a few lists and found them very useful for keeping up with new ideas and directions in the tech writing industry. I've even been able to help people occasionally. I recognise many of the names here from other lists, so I feel I am among friends already. I live in the Adelaide Hills in South Australia, and work for a great company, Saab Systems, as one of their tech writers. My career as a tech writer took off in the early nineties, when I began working for a consulting company that specialised in documentation and computer based training. In the seven years I worked there, I was mentored by experienced tech writers, and learned heaps. Before that I had worked for Telecom Australia in all sorts of capacities, some involving writing and training. I have been with Saab now for four years, and have worked in a variety of projects, using Word, FrameMaker, RoboHelp, PageMaker, Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop and lots more. My private life includes managing a web site and membership list for a local environmental group, and belonging to other environmental groups. I rattle around the 'Letters to the Editor' columns of the local newspaper every so often and keep trying to change the world for the better. I am also very interested in photography (as an amateur) and I am a co-editor of 'Image', which is the journal of the Australian Photographic Society. It goes out every two months, and helps to keep me busy. We use InDesign and Photoshop to put the magazine together. I also get involved with an occasional photographic competition. My role over the past few years has been to manage the databases for the competitions. I have a demanding Siamese cat, and a spoiled Cocker Spaniel dog, and life is good.
