Greetings, All: Glad to make your acquaintance (electronically).
I'm new to this list. I've been a "lurking" member of the TechWrtr-L for @ five months. I've been a technical writer for nine years; prior to this most recent career change, I've worked as an environmental, health and safety professional (for 15 years), and as a military public health director with the United States Air Force (for twenty years). I'm currently a contract technical writer with Bright House Networks (Orlando, FL); I write technical and non-technical documentation (wireless communications convergence) in support of a specific business within the Corporation. As an environmental, health and safety director, I was expected to write paralegal pieces on US and European environmental law in support of business operations and planning for multiple employers in the North and South America, Europe, and Asia. As a military public health director, I designed and wrote documents focusing on a "kaleidoscope" of uses and users. The purpose statements for those documents ranged from "Present a high-level public education piece describing malarial transmission paths and vectors for Turkish nationals" to "develop and present a preventative measures white paper on sexually-transmitted diseases for US security forces in transit from CONUS to Pacific Air Force duty stations" to "Describe war readiness triage capabilities and force status for in-country 1E and 2E medical facilities." My other work (and passion) lies in educational theory and practice. I'm an experienced instructional systems designer and technical instructor (military experience); I create curriculum planning documents, and design individual courses (and their lesson plans)in American/World History, Biology, and General Sciences. My professional writing has remained sporadic and has usually been the result of a business-related demand for a white paper on a proprietary service, equipment item, or such. I've been a member of STC since October of last year, and plan to renew my membership. I took the advice of several respected peers and volunteered to work within the local Chapter (as opposed to looking at others working within the local chapter) and have discovered the true value of membership. The learning that takes place during the informal discussions amongst my peers is priceless. I live in Deland (a small university town North of Orlando)and commute to the city each day. I am the Dad of a family of eight (Four grown boys (37 - 22) and two daughters (27 and 9) and a great wife/mom/partner/pal. I enjoy photography and music ( and learning all about really important stuff with my youngest daughter) as hobbies.
