Potted biography...
High school Teacher-Librarian, Head of Dept: Library, and Deputy Principal for a heap of years throughout Western Australia + one year on teacher exchange to Ontario, Canada where I first started using a computer and discovered CD-ROM encyclopedias (1986).
Segued into a library software company for 5 years doing everything from help desk, training, installations, demos, and writing. Realised I loved the writing side of it - web content, online help, training materials etc. so when the library software company imploded on itself (not pretty!), I found a job as a tech writer for another software company in Perth. Didn't know that what I'd been doing at school and at the library software company was actually called Tech Writing! Now I had a title, I started to discover some of my own flock - and really found my own kind when I joined HATT in about 1998/1999.
The second software company job lasted for 12 months (they didn't have enough work to keep me on full time), so I set up my own company in order to get a contract with a large mining company doing SAP doco. 7 years on and I've now worked for numerous companies - large and small (I prefer small) - and doing numerous writing assignments (SAP [blecchh!], policies and procedures, online help, screen demos, etc. etc.) for a variety of industries (mining and resources, education, geology, 3D movies, OH&S, retail diamond jewellery...).
Some of you I've 'met' on other lists, some I've met personally at STC and WritersUA Conferences (and AODC and ASTC (NSW)) that I've attended and spoken at in the past 6 or so years. I've made a lot of friends in the tech writing community and have received an enormous amount of assistance - I just hope I can give some back.
Oh, and I still live in Perth, Western Australia though not for much longer - we're selling up and moving to the country in a couple of months, when I'll try out the world of working remotely with my current Perth clients (I already work remotely for all other clients, so that's not a big deal). We'll be 3 hours from the city in a town of 5000 people, and investigating the benefits of a 'tree change'. And if my remote work with the 2 major clients doesn't work out, I'll be looking for contract/freelance writing and editing work!
