Well, in college, to be honest, I would have liked to know how much
money the person made.

I don't think there's anything wrong with coming prepared with a range
of salaries/geographic areas/areas of expertise, in fact I think it
would make an excellent lead-in to talking about the different kinds of
tech writing.

The best response I ever got was when I brought in examples of source
material - scribblings on a napkin, a drawing that was five circles and
six lines (NO TEXT), a picture of a white board covered with text but so
criss-crossed with arrows you could barely make anything out - and then
showed the docs I created from that source material.
