We had a similar situation with one of our printers. There were several cords that may or may not have been ordered with the printer, but we couldn't create a different version of the manual for each potential combination of cords. Where I showed a graphic of what the user would find in the box, I marked each optional cord with an asterisk and a note that said, "Depending on how your printer was ordered, this cord may not be included." At least that tells people that it's not us who didn't give them what they need. If they're missing cords, they can blame it on whoever ordered the printer. (CYA!) > And suggest how the TWer in question should have handled the business > about the cable. I don't care for the "may or may not" phrasing used in the Lexmark documentation. I like my way better (see above). :-) At the very least, the outside of the box should have told whether or not the cord was included so whoever buys the printer knows right away whether or not to buy one.
