I was not referring to gender as a factor in why someone
chooses to become a technical writer or in whether they
are good at the work. I was referring to how (mostly male)
developers and managers tend to perceive and behave
toward women who do a substantial amount of their work
at a keyboard compared to how the same people perceive
and behave toward a man doing the same kind of work.

I've not found that either gender is inherently more or less
"good at" doing the job of a tech writer, not that I've spent any
significant time thinking about it. Even if you accept that
women are "more social" than men (which I don't), being more
or less "social" is not universally an advantage or disadvantage
to a writer, because sometimes getting the job done calls for
guiding people to a happy consensus, but sometimes it calls
for being downright snarly, and someone who can't be both
and know which direction to go in a given situation is at an
equal disadvantage regardless of gender.
