That seems a bit accusatory, given what little we know about the situation. At any rate, although we can't be sure unless the original poster says so, this line:
"But what if I'm hanging up my shingle as a technical editor, or translator, or someone who takes a more active role?" ... led me to believe s/he is starting out in a new venture and wants to learn how to handle personality differences when there isn't a manager in charge.
