To a great extent, my present job was created by a buyout. As a standalone little local company, regulatory audit dings about documentation were pretty much ignored and that's just how they were handled, and they got away with it because their product QC audits were okay.
Then they were bought by a larger firm with its home offices in Toronto. And that company went public, and it's international, so ISO and SOX became magical incantations. Documentation turned into a much more important animal and they were smart enough to grab me when I blew across their driveway with a strong ISO setup background and internal ISO auditor certification. Right place, right time, some good marketing on my part by positioning my talents and targeting them to the right person. Had to get past HR first, which is another tale. If not for that buyout, they'd probably be doing the same-o same-o. So I like buyouts now. Had an experience several years ago where a little company was bought out by Thomas and Betts who promptly translated all of my wonderful clear work instructions into Spanish and moved the whole plant south of the border. And all of the jobs, including mine, without any invitations to any of us to follow them. Distracted by a husband suddenly going nuts and walking out without any notice -- with the car and the checkbook -- I missed what could have been a great opportunity but I tossed the NAFTA assistance offer into the junk mail pile instead of using it to get a Master's in TechComm. I am older and much wiser now, and less trusting and a little more skilled at turning lemons into mixed drinks.
