I'm a member of STC. I'm not as active as I would like to be--first it
was lack of time because my kids were small and now we moved to
somewhere that doesn't have a local chapter--but I participate in some
ways in the Chicago chapter where I used to be based.

Last fall, I entered two manuals in the Chicago STC chapter competition
and won two Distinguished awards plus a Best in Show [she said while
blushing mightily :-)]. The plaques from those awards will be displayed
on a wall at work near where other people's patent plaques are
displayed. That's a pretty good benefit to membership, in my book. I'll
find out in a couple of months if either of those manuals wins an award
at the national level. Plus I'm challenging myself now to improve on
something that was deemed "best." How can I make it even better?

I also have a pretty huge network on LinkedIn. I've gotten back in touch
with a bunch of former college classmates and former coworkers through
that and made some new online friends with similar interests to boot.
