Current memberships are KMPro (Knowledge Management Professionals), ACM (Association of Computing Machinery), and IWA/HWG. ACM has an extensive online reference library and a number of SIGs that appeal to my broad interests. At various times in the past I have also belonged to STC, which had very little benefit to me (and yes I did serve on the board), PRSA, ASTD, and the UPA. It really depends on what you're looking for. Right now I'm more interested in find out who's doing what in new technologies. I have a good network of contacts inside and outside the tech writing world, and I already have a Masters in communications, so the typical benefits of being in STC are not priorities for me at this stage in my career.
