One company I worked for had what I think was a good policy on tuition
(part of their CPD policy). Their view on any training/education/courses
was:

1.      If they felt you needed it (e.g. training on tools etc. -
anything  directly linked to work) then they paid, no quibbles.

2.      If it was something like an MA etc (they paid for mine!) then it
was looked at on merit. If it was seen as CPD and could be linked (often
vaguely!) to your job then that was OK but with a proviso. If they paid
and you subsequently left you became eligible for all/part of the cost
on a sliding scale(depending on how soon afterwards you left)
