Maybe "harmful" is too strong of a word. If you're not expecting it, the
auto assign feature can be annoying or inconvenient. It can even be a
royal pain if you find out at a bad time (like when you show up for your
chapter meeting and they try to charge you the non-member fee for
attending). But there probably isn't a lot of real harm associated with
having your chapter affiliation changed on you. Change it back, and the
problem is usually solved.
