Okay, I'll admit harmful is too strong. Of course, my chapter's classic experience with this product was when it dropped the chapter president and reassigned the chapter president to a new chapter.
And, from a personal perspective, that's an awful lot of hassle and runaround ... if "auto assign" were a product, it'd be recalled. If you're not expecting it, the auto assign feature can be annoying or inconvenient. It can even be a royal pain if you find out at a bad time (like when you show up for your chapter meeting and they try to charge you the non-member fee for attending). But there probably isn't a lot of real harm associated with having your chapter affiliation changed on you. Change it back, and the problem is usually solved.
