This is why I use Gmail for all list mail. Not only can I apply
filters, but it threads all conversations by subject. If I'm not
interested in the subject, I can mark the entire thread read and move
on, sometimes killing 20 messages in one keystroke. :) And of course I
archive everything, making dumpster diving for info very easy later
on.
