Hi,

I'm Susan Modlin. Some of your names are familiar from the Framers lists, where
I've been lurking for ages.

I'm new to this list, but not to TechComm. My second technical writing job
(I've suppressed all memory of the first one) was at Goddard Space Flight
Center in the early 1970's, when I was all of 3 years old (that's all I'll
admit to -- I have T-shirts older than the founders of my last two companies).
After a hiatus that took me into journalism and public relations, I returned to
tech pubs in the mid-80's, at the ripe old age of 7. I've been working in the
software industry ever since, mostly as a consultant, but also as a staff pubs
manager. About six months ago, I started my first staff gig as an individual
(and sole) contributor and I'm finding it very interesting.

Over the course of my tech pubs career, I've had a grand total of three staff
positions before the current one. Each of those three companies was acquired
and each acquisition ultimately led to a layoff. Each layoff, in turn, led to a
very lucrative stint as a consultant when the acquiring company realized that
they really do need documentation after all. One of the things about longevity
is that I'm finding that many of the things I fought for during the early
stages of my career -- respect for writers, inclusion of writers in the design
and and development of software, acknowledgment of writers as user advocates --
are all givens in my current company. At times I don't quite know how to
behave. As I said, very interesting.
