Unfortunately (at least from my point of view) this was what STC's greatest value was: forums within the profession for the exchange of ideas, techniques and experiences. That and providing employers with a place to post positions and search resumes where they can reach the largest possible number of prospective candidates who have self-screened themselves from the general Monster, Dice or HotJobs applicant populations simply by joining the organization and using the jobs and resume database.
In my opinion, STC's more recent efforts, such as attempting to create broad definitions of the profession to "educate" outsiders, aligning job descriptions and salary survey numbers to those of outside organizations and/or government agencies that have never understood what people in our profession do (I'm a writing manager who hires tech writers and I give no credence whatsoever to job descriptions and salary data from the US DOL compared to the info that formerly came directly from STC members), and yes, raising the dues, tend to decrease the value of the organization to me, both as a working writer and as a hiring manager, because they tend to reduce the number of working writers who read the jobs database, show up at the various social and other face-time gatherings and share their own professional and personal experiences with others. For now, the things that STC hasn't messed with (jobs and resume database, local chapter meetings and SIGs) are still working well enough to justify the expense of my continued membership. What happens down the line is another matter. Gene Kim-Eng ----- Original Message ----- From: "Milan Davidovic" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > The very first bit changed earlier this year.
