I suggest the revisiting of Farber's the student as nigger
Http://www.soilandhealth.org/03sov/0303critic/030301studentasnigger.html
as in many places
things have not changed for the better. I am on several sociology lists
and am continually amazed at the level of arrogance, use of punishment
in the classroom
and ignorance of student rights. Many of our colleagues see there job
as one of dragging students kicking and screaming to their flavor of
enlightenment.

At the same time academia is not set up for students faculty are also
exploited. I regularly receive email from list members who fear the
consequences of
posting critical content to the entire list. There is a frightening
level of faculty abuse ignored by "administration" I happened to be
close to such a situation and saw that
nothing was done.

Much of the problem is a result of education/grades becoming a
commodity. The dominant teacher/preacher model in the classroom is a
contributing factor.
many of our colleagues are told lecture or not get hired. Lecturing
ignores the science on learning.

Perhaps more sad is the fact that no one on this list would identify
break throughs in sociology. Shouldn't that be part of any intro course?
