Hi Jay, et al.

First, while none have contacted me, I would just like to say that I hope my
joking around yesterday did not offend anyone. If so, I apologize. I have
rarely confronted a student, even when rude comments were made. Instead, I
always try to offer constructive comments. My email yesterday was only
intended as a light-hearted "what I would like to say" follow-up.

With regard to Jay's post about email addresses, I thought I would share a
recent experience. I have just now started teaching in a program that offers
graduate degrees (MS/MA). The first week of class in my first graduate
seminar, I asked my students to provide some information, including email
addresses. When I looked at them, few were using the [EMAIL PROTECTED] address.
Most had "cute" email addresses at Yahoo, AOL, etc.

The next class I told my students I would not use off campus addresses due
to virus concerns. I also commented that they should probably think about
not using such address when sending emails. I said something like "If you
use your campus email address, most recipients are going to assume you are a
professor or some sort of professional. When applying for jobs or PhD
programs or submitting works, it just looks better..."

My students were genuinely surprised. They said they had never thought of
that, and decided it made perfect sense to use the university's webmail for
professional communications.

Peace
Robert
