I have a kirby and a bag-less (don't even know the brand) that works well too. The wife likes the bag-less and I like the kirby. The wife claims the kirby is too heavy so I weighed it and it about 1.5 #s heavier, but it is self propelled too.
The kirby is a stout machine that is 22 years old and works as well as it did when new. The only thing I have had to do to it was change the bags and the belt. So although it is expensive and I was upset when my x-wife purchased it I think it was worth the money in the long run. The bag-less we have was a third of the cost of the kirby but is made of plastic and I don't think it will last 22 years. With the additional cost of the 3 filters it has I don't know if it is really any cheaper than the kirby . . . We do however both fight over who is going to empty the bag-less as tapping out the filter is a PIA. I always gets some dust on me even when I place it in a bag to tap it out and you have to go outside to do it. It really isn't that bad but you have to do it twice when vacuuming the house as we have TOO MANY CATS!!!
