Good luck getting that changed!! Maintenance folks tend to be the unmovable wall.
We fought the same battle for years and finally conceded that we were not going to get the maintenance practices changed so we looked for ways to deal with it. We started by hiring student workers during the summer. They go through and re-image/clean all the computers. They go in behind the maintenance crews and set up and reconnect all the systems. We have been tweaking the system for a few years now and for the past couple years have streamlined the process to where it is no longer a problem. At the end of the school year, we require teachers, as part of their final check-off before they can leave for the year, to label all of their computers with their room number, mark all cables with the port number they are plugged in to, and disconnect them from the wall (we get about 95% compliance with this, after we explained that this helps guarantee they get the right computers back in their room). In August, we do check list for our student workers to go through each room, log on to each computer, ensure it is connecting to the network properly, in the correct subnet and has the correct image applied. The students then sign off on the checklist and leave an inspection card for the teacher with their name and the date the room was checked. This is the 2nd year using this system and for two years running we have not had any issues to speak of regarding systems not re-connected at the start of the year. Of course, we have all the OTHER issues related to start of school and this was particularly bad this year due to the Windows 7 implementation. I would be happy to share our checklists if anyone is interested - just let me know off-list. -TS Thomas C. Isn't there a better way than rucking everything out in the hall every summer?? ok. sigh. I'm done. </rant> Alicia M. M.
