It turns out that what I really need -- since I installed Community Builder and have disabled Joomla's core registration, using the CB user registration instead -- is a CAPTCHA for Community Builder.
Such a thing exists, but you have to purchase a subscription from CB -- and that isn't inexpensive. So I either have to go back and re-enable the default Joomla core user registration or I'm going to have to bite the bullet and subscribe to the CB community. I haven't really spent much time figuring out CB yet, and I've been debating whether Community ACL might be better than CB.
