I don't have Windows 7, but that sounds like a great utility.

> Joel Said:

I have a 5.9 -- and that's due to the HD data transfer rate (which

surprises me a bit because it's a Raptor 10K RPM with a clean

install). Everything else is 7.7 or 7.4 -- and the top possible is

7.9?

Maybe the default disk setups done by the OS installers are letting us
down.

It looks like a lot of attention needs to be paid to disk sector alignment.
I found a couple URL's about it:

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/jimmymay/archive/2009/05/08/disk-partition-alignment-sector-alignment-make-the-case-with-this-template.aspx
http://spiralofhope.com/partition-alignment.html

In my Linux world, the disk utility gparted will take alignment into
consideration. The "Round to cylinders" opiton is checked by default.

Specifying Partition Alignment

    * GParted Manual
    * Working with Partitions
    * Intermediate Partition Actions
    * Specifying Partition Details
      *To specify the alignment of the partition, use the Round to cylinders
check box.*
    * To enable, select the Round to cylinders check box.
    * To disable, deselect the Round to cylinders check box.

There's also disk manufacturer disk alignment utilities. But it surprises me
that this isn't always all worked out under the hood, for fresh system
installs.
