Besty, Maybe you're approaching this from the wrong angle. Instead of reducing your backup schedule and mucking around with it, why not try to reduce the data you backup?
Setup a /scratch area which is where people put work by default, but if they want to save it, have them migrate it to the /backup/... area. Or see if you can compress all your data ahead of time.
