I strongly agree with this last statements. How often do the backup group 
get a bad tape (do they even keep statistics of that) ?

The more tapes you need to use for one restore, the more chances you have 
not to be able to restore. I might be a bit biased because of the industry 
most my customers are in, but how valuable is your data ? How much would it 
cost the company to loose (or have to regenerate IF that's possible) one 
week of data ? 2 weeks of data ? 57 days of data (if your last full is broken) ?
